How to set a hard data limit for Android phone

Posted by Unknown Selasa, 31 Juli 2012 0 komentar
The latest 4G-enabled Android phones tend to consume wireless data at an alarmingly rapid pace—and that’s a problem, particularly since most of the big U.S. carriers only offer a limited monthly allowance of high-speed data.

That’s why I’m bullish about a feature in the new “Ice Cream Sandwich” version of Google’s mobile Android software: a data-usage monitor that warns you if you’re approaching your monthly data limit, plus the option to turn off 3G or 4G data entirely before your carrier starts charging you extra.
Now, keep in mind that “Ice Cream Sandwich,” a.k.a. Android 4.0, is a relatively new version of Google’s Android platform—hence, it’s only available on a handful of phones. In the coming months, though, more and more Android smartphones will arrive with a healthy scoop of Ice Cream Sandwich.

And one more thing: keep in mind that “mobile data” refers to 3G and 4G data from your carrier, not your Wi-Fi network at home or Wi-Fi hotspots elsewhere.
  • Launch the Settings application and tap “Data Usage.”
  • You’ll see a chart showing your 3G and/or 4G data usage over a period of days, weeks and month, along with yellow and red sliders that let you set data “warning” and “limit” levels. Beneath the chart is a breakdown of your most data-hungry apps.
  • To set a “hard” data limit for your phone, check the box next to “Set mobile data limit,” then tap and move the red slider. My advice: pick a limit that’s the same as the mobile data “cap” set by your carrier. In the example here, I settled on 200 MB, the upper limit of AT&T’s $15-a-month “DataPlus” plan. Verizon Wireless users should probably go with 5 GB, which is the size of Verizon’s smallest smartphone data plan.
  • Next, choose a “warning” level—the point at which your phone will alert you that you’re approaching your “hard” data limit—by tapping and moving the yellow slider.
  • Last but not least, set your data usage cycle by tapping and moving the date ranges in the chart. So, when does your data billing cycle begin and end? Check your monthly bill, access your online carrier account, or just call your carrier and ask.
That’s it! Now, when you’re on the road streaming music via Pandora or watching movies on the mobile Netflix app, you’ll get an alert when you’re creeping up on your “hard” data limit. And once you hit the limit, a pop-up will appear that reads: “Mobile data disabled; the specified data usage limit has been reached.”

You will, of course, have the option to turn your mobile data back on; if you do, though, expect to see an extra charge for additional data on your next wireless bill.

How to sync all Gmail folders, not just the inbox

Posted by Unknown Senin, 30 Juli 2012 0 komentar
Got your Gmail on your Android phone? If so, you may have noticed that the Gmail app for Android only syncs your inbox, sent mail, and “priority” messages automatically, not all your other folders—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, given the amount of juice it would take to keep all your various Gmail folders in sync.

But here’s the thing: you can, if you wish, go ahead and force your Android phone to regularly sync some or all of your custom Gmail sub-folders (or “labels,” as Google calls them), so long as you’re willing to settle for a little less battery life. (How much less depends on the particular make and model of your phone, of course.)

Here’s how to do it.
Select new Gmail labels to sync 187x300 Android tip: How to sync all your Gmail folders, not just the inbox
Just select a label in Gmail's Synchronization settings menu to sync it automatically.
  • Launch your phone’s Gmail app, tap the Menu button, then select More, Settings.
  • Under the “Account settings” heading, tap the email address for the Gmail account you’d like to tweak (you’ll most likely have just a single choice, unless you’ve set up multiple email accounts in the Gmail app), then tap the “Sync inboxes and labels” option.
  • Next, you’ll be presented with a (potentially lengthy) list of folders—er, labels—in you Gmail account. Any label that’s already being synced will have a little blue note beneath telling you whether some or all of its messages are getting checked.
  • Want one (or more) of your non-synced labels to get synced automatically? Tap the arrow to the right of the label name, then select an option: “Sync none” (which should already be selected), “Sync last 4 days,” (I’ll show you how to change the number of days in a moment), or “Sync all.” The moment you tap a new setting, your changes will take effect.
  • Now, what if you want to sync five days of email rather than four? To do so, scroll to the top of the page, tap “Amount of mail to sync,” and pick a number. Unfortunately, you can’t set the Android Gmail app to, say, sync five days of email for one label and four for another; the setting you pick will apply to all your email labels. Oh well.

How to use voice commands on Android phone

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
The new voice-activated “intelligent assistant” for the upcoming iPhone 4S, may be getting all the buzz, but you can already bark commands at your handset if you own a relatively recent Android smartphone.
No, Android’s “Voice Actions” feature won’t check your calendar or tell you if you’ll need a raincoat today like Siri (supposedly) can, but it will compose text messages, queue up songs, place phone calls, and even figure out driving directions. Just say the word.
Android Voice Actions text message 300x245 How to use voice commands on your Android phone
Just say "send text" to compose a quick text message with the power of your voice.
Ready to start bossing your Android device around? Let’s get started.
  • First, make sure your Android phone actually supports Google’s “Voice Actions” feature. Tap Applications, then Settings. Next, tap “About this phone” and select the “Software information” option. Under the “Android version” heading, does it read “2.2″ or higher? If so, your phone is ready for Voice Actions. If not, back up to the main Settings page and tap “Software update” to see if there’s an update available for your phone—and if that doesn’t work … sorry, no dice.
  • Now, it’s time to download some apps. You’ll need the latest versions of both Voice Search and Google Search installed on your phone; click here and here to install them from the web-based Android Market, or launch the Android Market app on your phone to search for them.
  • Ready for your first voice command? Press and hold the Search button; on most Android phones, it’s marked with a magnifying glass and sits just beneath the display, to the right. You can also tap Search, then tap the little microphone icon next to the search box.
  • When the “Speak now” pop-up window appears, try saying “map of New York.” After chewing on your command for a second or two, you’ll get a confirmation message that reads “Map of new york”; hit the “Go” button, and Google Maps will open, complete with an arrow pinpointing the Big Apple.
  • How about a text message? Press and hold the Search button again, and say “send text to [name of a friend in your contact book] let’s have dinner.” In a few seconds, a draft text message should appear, complete with the correct phone number (hopefully, anyway) of your pal already listed in the “To:” field. Tap the “Send” button to send your message, or press the little microphone icon to “speak” more text.
  • So, what else can Voice Actions do? You can “call” a person or a business, “send email” to someone, “go to” a website, “listen” to a song or artist, get “directions to” somewhere, or get turn-by-turn directions by saying “navigate t.o” Click here for a more detailed list of commands.

How to view Google Maps in 3D

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
If Google Maps on your Android phone has been feeling a little flat lately, get ready to add a little depth to the experience.

A feature in the latest version of Google Maps for Android lets you tilt the map view for a 3D-like perspective, complete with 3D buildings for more than a dozen major cities.
Google Maps tips 300x298 Android phone tip: How to view Google Maps in 3D
Just drag down with two fingertips to tilt Google Maps for a 3D-like perspective.

The 3D feature is well hidden—indeed, digging around the various menus on the Google Maps app for Android won’t do you much good.
But here’s the trick: just drag down on the screen with two fingertips.
As you do, Google Maps will tilt down to about 45 degrees or so.
And if you zoom in close enough (just “pinch” with your fingertips), you’ll see 3D outlines of buildings and skyscrapers in cities like Boston, New York, Vancouver, Chicago, San Francisco, and Paris.

Want to go back to the usual flat view? Just drag your two fingertips back “up” on the screen.
Note: Keep in mind that older Android phones may not support the 3D feature in Google Maps.

How to sync desktop browser tabs with Android phone

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
iPhone users will get on-the-go, iCloud-enabled access to any open browser tabs on their desktops. It’s a nifty new feature for anyone who’s heading out the door but wants to keep web surfing—and it also happens to be a trick you can perform on your Android phone right now.
All you need is a Google account and the mobile version of Google’s impressive Chrome web browser, which is now available (and free) for Android handsets.

Update [6/28/12]: The mobile version of Chrome—including the ability to sync your open browser tabs—is now available for iPhone and iPad, as well.
List of synched Chrome tabs 168x300 How to sync your desktop browser tabs with your Android phone
Just tap a button (it’s the one with the arrows in the bottom-right corner) to see a list of all your synced Chrome tabs.

Ready to take your desktop browser tabs on the road? Here’s how:
  • First, you’ll need to install Google’s Chrome browser on both your desktop and your Android phone. You can download the desktop version of Chrome here, then grab the mobile Chrome over here.
  • Next, you must sync the desktop version of Chrome with your Google account. (Don’t have one? You can sign up for free here.) On your desktop, launch Chrome, click the little wrench in the top-right corner of the browser, select “Sign in to Chrome,” click in the “Sign in to Chrome” button near the top of the following page, then enter your Google email address and password.
  • Once that’s done, a pop-up window will ask if you’d like to sync all your Chrome data—including Chrome apps, bookmarks, themes, and other settings—with Google. I recommend you go ahead and click the “Sync everything” button, but you can also click the “Advanced settings” link to pick and choose which items you’d like to sync—and which you’d rather not.
  • All set? Time to fire up Chrome on your Android phone. Once you do, you’ll be prompted to sign in with your Google account—and once that’s all set, your desktop Chrome browser and Chrome on your phone will be linked.
  • Now, open a new browser tab on the desktop Chrome—say, the New York Times. Done? Then pull out your Android phone, open mobile Chrome, and tap the tab with the syncing arrows in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
  • You should now see a list of “other devices,” such as the desktop version of Chrome, that are syncing with Chrome on your phone—and under the heading for your desktop PC, you should see a tab for the New York Times. Tap it, and voilà—you just loaded a browser tab from your desktop to Chrome on your Android phone.

How to decline a call with a text message

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Don’t have time to take an incoming call, but don’t want to just send your caller to voicemail? If you’ve got a newer Android phone, there’s another option: you can also send a quick, pre-written text message while you’re declining the call.

Most Android handsets running on the latest “Ice Cream Sandwich” version of Google’s Android operating system have this so-called “quick response” feature, which lets you choose from a short list of canned text messages (such as “I’ll call you later” and “Can’t talk right now, what’s up?”) as you’re declining an incoming call.
List of quick responses 300x232 Android tip: How to decline a call with a text message
Just tap a pre-written message to send it instantly to a caller you've sent to voicemail.
It’s a fairly straightforward process, but keep in mind that it may work slightly differently on your particular make and model of Android phone.
In this article, I’ll be describing how “quick responses” work on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which runs on the standard, “stock” version of “Ice Cream Sandwich” (a.k.a. Android 4.0).
  • The next time your Android phone starts ringing, look closely at the options that appear on your phone’s lock screen. In addition to the “Pick up” and “Decline” icons, you may see a third text-message icon; just tap that icon, or drag the “ring” on the lock screen to select the button. (Note: You might not see the text-message option until after you decline a call, depending on the make of your Android phone.)
  • You should now see a short list of quick-response text messages; tap one to send it instantly to the call you just declined. You can also send a custom message if you wish.
  • Want to customize your list of quick responses? Just dig into your phone’s calling settings. On the Galaxy Nexus, for example, open the Phone application, tap the Menu button in the bottom right corner of the screen, tap Settings, “Quick responses,” then tap the message you’d like to edit.

How to Setup Another Personal Email Account Aside From Gmail on Samsung Galaxy S3

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 26 Juli 2012 0 komentar
You can also setup another personal email account on your Samsung Galaxy S3 via POP (Post Office Protocol) or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) options.  In these option you can send an email email using mobile data settings. But the downside of these option is that it only works when connected via WIFI and the phone deletes the account daily and it needs to be recreated. As different wifi connections have different SMTP server settings it makes sense to set up and use mobile data settings for sending emails however as wifi overrides mobile data you need to manually turn off wifi to send an email.

But if you want to setup an email account you can simply do it as follows:

  • Tap on Apps
  • Tap on the "Email" icon
  • Tap on the box and type in your email address username and then the password
  • Tap on Next
  • Select server type which POP3 Outgoing Server Settings
  • Ask from your email service provider and fill in the incoming email server settings and tap Next.
  • Type in your email username on the box
  • Fill in in your email's incoming email server. Select None for Security Type
  • Type in your outgoing email server. Select None again for security type.
  • Put a tick on the box that says "Require Sign In"
  • Tap on Next.
  • Select your desired time for Email check frequency for your phone to check and retrieve emails.
  • Tick Sync Email and tick Notify me when email arrives.
  • Type the display or sender name you want and then tap on Done

Standardization Will Destroy Our Education System, If It Hasn't Already

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Cross-posted at the Huffington Post.

This summer I have made a commitment to reading more and have chosen books that I think will help me become a better leader.  A few weeks ago I finished Drive by Daniel Pink and am now halfway through with Linchpin bySeth Godin.  I highly recommend both of these book at any educators who is interested about the science behind motivation or overcoming resistance to become and indispensable component of an educational organization.

Through my reading of both books it has become painfully clear that many of our current politicians and so-called educational reformers have it completely wrong when it comes to standardization.  Now I have always thought this was the case, but these two books have not only reaffirmed my views, but also given me a great deal of concern as we inch closer to an educational system that focuses on test scores as the number one determinant of achievement.

Dan Pink reveals that the keys unlocking and sustaining intrinsic motivation are autonomy, mastery, and purpose.  As a leader this is the type of teaching and learning culture that I want to foster and cultivate, one where creativity flourishes, students find relevancy and meaning in their learning, and teachers are given the support to be innovative.  A teaching and learning culture powered by intrinsic motivation will achieve this.

Unfortunately we are being forced in the opposite directions.  The current education movement is laden with "if-then" rewards and a carrots & sticks approach to motivation. If students score well on standardized tests they move on to the next grade level or graduate while their teachers receive favorable marks on evaluations.  These are forms of extrinsic motivation and will work in short term, but performance will not be sustainable as those motivated intrinsically.  The same can be said for merit pay.  Pink has provided a compelling case as to why this will never work and this is supported by the research.

Students are not motivated by standardized tests, as they find no true meaning and value in them.  Teachers are motivated for all the wrong reasons, of which includes job security or a financial incentive.  A focus on standardization narrows the curriculum and creates a teaching culture where creativity, exploration, critical thinking are scarce or non-existent.  It creates a culture that students do not want to be a part of and one that can only be sustained with the use of "if-then" rewards or carrots and sticks.  Is this the direction we want to go in?  Do we want schools to squash creativity and reinforce a model that worked will in the 20th Century that will not prepare our students for their future?

Seth Godin describes linchpins as indispensable components of an organization that are artists in there own right.  These individuals don’t follow a manual, but instead are guided by an urge to do what is right.  In my opinion we want to create schools that allow teachers to become linchpins because in the end students benefit from their creativity, passion, and innovative mindset. However, standardization follows in the footsteps of a century-old education model focused on industrialization, which influences teachers and administrators in a way where the artist in each of them never evolves.  This entrenched system produces students that lack creativity, are fearful of failure, work extremely hard to follow directions (homework, study for tests, not question authority), and are leaving schools with undesirable skills in a post-industrial society. Schools focus more on filling the minds of students with useless facts and knowledge as opposed to learning essential skills that can't be measured with a #2 pencil.

Godin continues to provide example after example of how education has it all wrong.  Take the resume for example.  Virtually every school has students craft one to go along with their college application materials.  Students don't need resumes, they need to create artifacts of learning that provides detail as to what they can really do or know.  Godin provides a compelling alternative to a traditional resume and hiring process.  I have tweaked the business example he provided into an educational one. Instead of standardization, have students make a presentation of their resume and skills learned while in school.  Have them defend, answer questions, and lead a discussion with a variety of stakeholders.  Does this seem more meaningful and relevant? When analyzing the science of motivation presented to Drive I would certainly say so.

My only hope, and this is wishful thinking, is that research and common sense will ultimately prevail to save our education system from future demise if those with influence and power keep steering us in a failed direction.  Let us learn from the past and create an educational system that instills a sense of intrinsic motivation and creates learners that are indispensable.

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 25 Juli 2012 0 komentar
United Kingdom best seller Samsung Galaxy S3 makes another record breaking again when it comes to the latest firmware update available from any other variants around the world. Today, another firmware with build number I9300XXBLG6 is now spotted and available on Kies. This firmware is the second update for this month after the earlier released I9300XXBLFB. The firmware is only available for SIM-Free or unbranded version, and not available for those using with carrier branded ones, like T-Mobile, Vodafone,Orange,3 Network and O2.
There are no certain reports about the previous build ICS 4.0.4 LFB experiencing some serious issues, as we dig over some of Galaxy S3 users forums. Probably, Samsung is now unleashing the Samsung Galaxy S3 to its full capability to give users a fully satisfied experience using the device. So, when it comes to extreme users experience a more stable Android firmware might be considered a great resource aside from its hardware specifications and speeds.

Anyway, this firmware is still packed in Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, this must be a preparation for the upcoming Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that are about to be release soon.

Firmware info:
Model: Samsung Galaxy S III GT-I9300 (Unbranded/SIMFree/Unlocked)

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Firmware Update for Samsung Galaxy S3 is ongoing testing

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 21 Juli 2012 0 komentar
According to the always well-informed website SamMobile, Samsung is already working with the testing of Android 4.1 nicknamed Jellybean for Samsung Galaxy S3. The Android Jelly Bean is the most advance Android OS for Smartphones this days.
Android 4.1 Jellybean was only recently unveiled by Google and can be found and experienced with Galaxy Nexus users already, but it seems that the new testing policy - which manufacturers previously have access to new versions of Android - is paying off throws. According to sources, the Koreans SamMobile's now almost ready to update the Galaxy S3 - possibly as early as August or September.

Samsung itself has still no official statement on its policy update to Android 4.1 - just an announcement that this explanation. For now it seems - despite the good news about a possible quick update - prudent to await this statement.

An Action Plan for AP Success

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 18 Juli 2012 0 komentar

Advanced Placement (AP) exams, in a variety of subjects, are offered at virtually every high school.  I had been particularly concerned about my school’s overall performance the past couple of years.  Our scores were well below the state level and our District Factor Group (DFG), which is a comparison of similar schools based on socioeconomics.  Last year only 46% of those students taking AP exams scored a 3 or higher.  This number was so troubling that we knew it was time to take action.

In collaboration with Central Office, some changes were made in late June of 2011.  Historically, up until this point the District paid the full cost of exams taken for every student, regardless of the score they received.  The first major change was that only students scoring a 3 or higher would be fully reimbursed for the cost of each AP exam he or she took.  Yes, this is an example of an “if-then” reward.  Daniel Pink would probably not endorse this type of motivation, but it was obvious that the current structure was not working, as many students didn’t seem to be taking the exam(s) seriously.  The second major change, with the assistance from Central Office, was to encourage AP teachers to attend a week of targeted training sponsored by the College Board and then to provide them with reimbursement.  The last change was the development of an action plan by my HS Administrative team and me focusing on bringing up our overall scores.   We decided to shoot for the stars and established the following goal: By June 2012 seventy-five percent (75%) of the students taking an Advanced Placement (AP) exam will score a three (3) or better.

AP scores were recently released and I was totally shocked when the scores were broken down.  We experienced significant gains over the previous year where 72% of our students taking the exams scored a 3 or higher.  This represented a 26% increase over the previous year.  Those who follow me on Twitter were able to experience my excitement and pride firsthand as I shared this amazing news.  I was so proud of my students and AP teachers, as well as the collective work of both the High School and District Administrative teams.  We identified an area where we needed to improve, didn’t make excuses, and developed a multifaceted strategy to address the issue at hand.

Many educators asked me specifically about the strategic plan I developed with my administrative team at the high school.  Based upon the goal stated previously, the following activities were put in place and monitored throughout the year:

  • In September, all involved staff will meet to discuss how to increase AP scores and review data from last year.  This meeting was held and the dismal scores from the previous year were discussed.  Collaboratively as a group activities were established to address our low scores.
  • Administer practice tests and problems through Study Island and other web-based resources. Other resources suggested to teachers included the following:
  • Organize a minimum 3 study sessions throughout the year leading up to the test.
  • Consult with local high-performing districts to acquire strategies and tips.
  • Attend relevant training during the year.
  • Identify constraints that could hinder success of the plan (time, availability to attend trainings, student participation, Study Island not available for all tested subjects).
Action plans do not have to be fancy in order to be successful. The changes and action plan highlighted above were able to assist us in significantly improving student achievement on the AP exams.  However, none of this would have been possible had it not been for the hard work on behalf of my students and teachers as well as the collaboration and support from Central Office.

If you need to transfer a music files from your computer into your Samsung Galaxy S3 there are several ways on how simply to do it.  You can copy music files on these following formats - MP3, 3GA, AAC, M4A, and WMA music files. The below methods are just the simplest way I think.

Transfer Music files from Computer to Galaxy S3 as Removable Disk Drive
This is the most common methods on transferring music files directly from computer storage by connecting your Galaxy S3 to the computer using the USB cable.
A Galaxy S3 USB drivers is needed for Windows users and for Mac users not needed.

1) Connect your Galaxy S3 to your PC using the USB data cable.
2) Select Connected as media Device > Media device (MTP).
3. A removable disk will mount to your computer. You will see it listed under Computer if you’re a Windows user, or on the Desktop if you’re a Mac user.
4) Navigate the phone storage then locate the "Music folder".
(If you can't see any Music folder, create one and renamed as "Music".
5) Now simply copy or drag and drop all your favorite music to that music folder.
6) Once finished copying music files, safely removed the phone from PC connection.

Transfer Music files from Computer to Samsung Galaxy S3 using Samsung Kies software
First, you need to download Samsung Kies of you do not have installed it, and then you can transfer music files via USB or via WiFi wireless option.

1) Connect Samsung Galaxy S3 to your computer via USB.
2) Access the 'music' folder as shown on the hard drive.
3) Copy and paste all your favorite music to the Music Folder.
4) Once transferring music is done, safely removed you Galaxy S3 from the computer

So, that's it! You can now verify your copied Music files by playing it with your Galaxy S3 music player.

How to Store Captured Photos and Videos on SD card on your Samsung Galaxy S3

Posted by Unknown Senin, 16 Juli 2012 0 komentar
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the newest flagship of Samsung which is equipped with on-board 8 megapixel HD camera that enables you to shoot splendid photos and videos. Now, if you wanted to save more space of your Galaxy S3 memory storage, you might wanna save your taken photos and videos to your external SD card.
The camera captured photos may consume around 5MB of disk space, but the videos will take up larger than 100MB so if you are a video and photo fanatics you'll probably struggling in saving your phone's internal memory usage. So, instead by storing all your photos and videos directly to your Galaxy S3 internal memory it is bit smarter to save it on your external SD card. Remember, the external micro SDcard is expandable up to 64GB,  so that's a lot of files to store on it.

To save your Samsung Galaxy S3 photos and videos to your external SD card just simply follow this simple steps.
1)  Ensure that you have installed a microSD card on your Galaxy S3.
2) Go to "CAMERA"
3) Tap the camera settings 'gear icon' in the bottom left, then scroll down.
4) In the given options simply select "SD card" to assign where your photos and videos to be saved.

That's it! Enjoy.

How to Connect Samsung Galaxy S3 to MAC PC using Android File Transfer

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 15 Juli 2012 0 komentar
Some users of Samsung Galaxy S3 struggling to connect their devices to a PC running with MAC OSX. Using the Android File Transfer on Windows computer seems no issues but when it comes to Mac computers and Macbook pro laptops seems there is a problem with the connection.

Connecting Samsung Galaxy S3 to MAC PC using Android File Transfer issues:

So I got my SGS3 yesterday and noticed that the Android File Transfer app won't work, which used to work well when I owned a Galaxy Nexus. I tried it on 2 different Macs and it won't work on neither. The app does not recognize the phone being connected. When I connected it on windows (bootcamp, same Mac) it was recognized, so it's not a hardware fail, it's a software bug.

My Q is, has anybody successfully managed to use the Android File Transfer app together with a Galaxy S3.
Thx, all the help greatly appreciated.
It's definitely something with my Mac. I connected to my virtual Win7 machine on my Mac and it freaks out with the installing new software pop-up over and over but never connects.
Now it's gonna drive me crazy till I figure out what's going on with my Mac!

Hey guys, i'm having an issue with the file transfer. I can see both internal memory and SD, but when i tried to drag and drop from Finder it is giving me an error, saying my screen is locked (even when it isn't) and asking me to reconnect. anyone else have this problem? for now i'm transferring using File Explorer but its a pain in the ass. thanks!

I had this problem when I just got my Galaxy S3 at the end of May, and switching the connection mode to camera (ptp) did the trick. Now, however, regardless of the connection type I have chosen or whether or not I have enabled debugging, I cannot use AFT. At no point does it recognize my device, it just keeps telling me "No Android device found. Please connect your Android device with a USB cable to get started." I have reinstalled the program and still no luck.
MTP never worked for me on my Macbook, while PTP worked as a workaround until LFB (and later). With LFB changing to PTP (by default) pops up Image Capture, which, if everything worked as it should, is what you'd expect I suppose. The problem is that Image Capture doesn't find any pictures on the device even though it recognises that an I9300 is connected - and Android File Manager now doesn't work in either MTP or PTP mode.

Connecting Samsung Galaxy S3 to MAC PC using Android File Transfer Solution:
On your phone, when connected to the AFP program on your mac, you'll see a USB symbol in the notification area. Pull it down and you'll see it says something like 'Connected as media device' and it'll give you options underneath that to change it. Select that and you'll get to a settings page which will allow you to set your phone as a media device ((MTP) or as a camera (PTP) - do the latter and it should work fine.
I have to say, I love this phone but am not overly enamoured with the mac syncing aspect of it. Most apps in the store are flaky at best or don't work at all, TBH. Using the above method, I've managed to get my media over to the phone by dragging/dropping from iTunes and iPhoto.

Problem is, I still can't find a way for my computer to - reliably - see my phone as a camera when I plug it in e.g. invisible to iPhoto and Image capture.

I did actually. Turns out you have to check Camera (PTP) mode instead of Media device (MTP) mode.
Once I connected and checked PTP, the Android File Transfer now sees my phone
You don't need to be in debug mode either.

Streamlining BYOD With ClassLink

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 12 Juli 2012 0 komentar

After a semester long pilot program with the senior class during the spring of 2011, we rolled out our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to the entire student body in September.  Throughout the entire 2011-2012 school year, we worked to refine our approach, implementation, and learning outcomes for the program.  The model that we developed is customized, based on our student body and overall objectives of the program.

Students are permitted to use their devices for learning during non-instructional time (i.e. lunch) or in class at the discretion of the teacher.  Mobile learning devices (i.e. cell phones) have been successfully integrated as student response systems using free web 2.0 tools such as Poll Everywhere and Celly.  Smartphones and Internet accessible devices have been used by students to conduct web-based research, take notes using Evernote, manage work through Google Docs or Dropbox, organize their assignments on their calendars, and develop projects with a variety of other tools.  Even though our school has more than enough available technology in four computer labs and two mobile carts, some students are more comfortable working on their own devices.

One thing we quickly realized is that our students owned and brought a diversity of devices to school including smartphones, iTouches, iPads, laptops, and other tablet devices (Kindles, Nooks, Playbooks, etc.).  The challenge then became how to deliver a uniform experience across all devices in order to assist with the teaching and learning process.  The solution came in the form of an award winning, web-based application called ClassLink Launchpad

With ClassLink students and teachers can access a customized dashboard that is pre-loaded with a variety of tools that are used on a regular basis.  I was able to establish the specific tools added to each of the respective dashboard (teacher, student).  The best part is that for both groups the dashboard appears the same no matter the device that is used to login and access it. Below is what the dashboard looks like for my teachers.

Setup was a breeze, which was managed by both representatives from ClassLink and my IT department.  Student and staff information was uploaded from our information management system (PowerSchool) in a seamless fashion. Existing usernames and passwords for both teachers and students could be used to access the ClassLink Launchpad application.  An added bonus for my teachers was that Classlink allowed them access for the first time to their school drive, which we call the p drive.  With this feature on their dashboard they could not only access files that have been saved for years at home, but they could also work from these same files now at home and conveniently save.

We began using ClassLink late in the spring, but are extremely excited about the promise that this solution holds to enhance the teaching and learning culture of our school through BYOD.  There are so many more features that my teachers and I will explore in the coming months.  More training and webinars will be provided for my staff so they are comfortable using ClassLink with learning in in mind.  We will also focus on making students aware of ClassLink and the dashboard that has been specifically created for them.

How do you manage your BYOD program if you have one at your school?  If you don't, what are the factors holding you back?
